ECS at CES... so confusing to read in the morning; where's my coffee
These PCs are looking pretty fantastic. Definitely going to get something like this for my wife's next 'desktop' in a few years. I would prefer it to be a bit more graphically capable than her Ivy Bridge i3, while being fanless and VESA mountable. They are almost there today... perhaps one more die shrink and they will get there.
With the exception a fan (do these have fans?), there's nothing that would be harmed if it were to get knocked over. I supposed if it was built poorly or fell just right, a stick of RAM might come loose, but I doubt it.
On the topic of Skylake... I know that it does partial 4K HEVC decoding, but what about full 10-bit 4K HEVC to be compatible with UHD Blu-ray playback? Will we have to wait for Kaby Lake to get proper support?
It appears they do have fans. There are vents. 90W PSU. 65W CPU. You might have a mechanical HDD in there, depending on the internal assembly, a number of things may go wrong if you know it over periodically, even if it is built like a tank and has only SSD storage, it is still annoying.
I guess the decision to make it a tower has to do with the traditional perception of PCs - most are in tower cases, so having such a small tower stresses how small his PC is. It just wouldn't stand out if oriented horizontally.
this takes up less space on the table and you can put it close to the wall or something so it's difficult to have a situation where you'd knock it over. If it was horizontal people would want to put stuff on it and that's thermically no good.
Someone in marketing decided they looked better. I think you could orient them either way though; the one on the left in the picture at the top of the article has what looks like rubber feet on its right side. That'd only make sense if you could lay it flat. It's also missing the wider base shown in the specsheet comparison graphic; so that appears to be removable.

I can imagine 2 reasons:- to save desk space
- to avoid users burying the devices under tons of paper, which could lead to thermal problems

Fan noise is an issue over time due to the smallness of the fan?
