Modern edge display technology is a compromise between screen real estate, comfort, and aesthetics. Personally, I’ve never owned a Note, or a device with an excessive edge with edge-related technologies: I find the hold compromised and the edge features often don’t justify the discomfort. TCL is aiming for its Waterfall display to solve that.

The company was keen to point out that this isn’t a standard edge on a smartphone – the display wraps around to 80+ degrees, making it a more comfortable hold on both sides of the device. Being a display company, TCL also wanted the edge to maintain color reproducibility and to minimise any specific color shift in the design.

The demonstration devices TCL showed us were not interactive like the One Piece design, and played a fixed video on a loop to show how moving images and colors were dealt with based on the display technology. Discussions with TCL obviously extended to wearable technology with the display, to which the company stated that they are exploring multiple avenues.

Personally, a big thumbs up for tech demos.

It essentially looks cool in reviews and in pictures but it's practically worthless. Add to the fact that when you watch a movie or view pictures, the edge of the image is distorted and some not visible without turning the phone on the side. Reply

On the Samsungs they're touch sensitive for the curved edge specific apps but can be disabled. I gave them a shot then disabled them for exactly that reason.

And yes, a case will basically cover those curved edges but there are also some translucent ones. However they still distort the edge screens and the thicker/tougher cases preclude any viewing. As I mentioned above I would much rather have a flat screen. Or better yet, a flat screen with slightly curved back--although it will rock/roll when laid down, that is what makes it easy to pick up and hold.

...but then a flat screen would also shatter. Nothing protects from direct impact of a protrusion, a film may help but not by much. Reply

The sides would be slightly more vulnerable but not that different from current curved screens. The edges of the case would simply cover only the midframe, but any case with decent protection should be thick enough to protect the screen in most cases, often by thick edges on the top and bottom propping up the unit to prevent the screen from coming into contact with a flat surface, however if it falls onto some irregular rocks it would probably shatter. I'm going to guess something similar as all those other edge display phones that have been out for years. They have cases and palm rejection software. Reply

I can't be the only one who read the title as "TLC Waterfalls" ahaha

I honestly thought it something to do with remastering the old video with new CGI!

I want flat screens. 100% flat screens. That way I can I put a screen protector on it completely, and not have a stupid edge. Everything other than a totally flat screen is simply a "feature" which makes it easier to break and scratch. Screw that. Reply

The only decent bent edged display that was decent that I've used is/was the Note Edge. Having app shortcuts there and some controls is pretty good. Even then, it was too small and even only on one side, quite easy to accidentally touch. That's not to mention the reflections and difficulty in protecting it. And drawing/writing on it.

Sorry, but the whole concept isn't good in real life.
