The Test

In recent times, choosing a motherboard cannot be completely determined by a Winstone score. Now, many boards come within one Winstone point of each other and therefore the need to benchmark boards against each other falls. Therefore you shouldn't base your decision entirely on the benchmarks you see here, but also on the technical features and advantages of this particular board, seeing as that will probably make the greatest difference in your overall experience.

Test Configuration

Processor(s): AMD K6/233 ANR & Intel Pentium MMX 233 & Cyrix 6x86MX-PR2/200
RAM: 2 - 32MB Advanced Megatrends SDRAM DIMMs
2 - 32MB Corsair SDRAM DIMMs
1 - 64MB Corsair SDRAM DIMM (onboard EPROM)
Hard Drive(s): Western Digital Caviar AC21600H
Video Card: ATI Xpert@Work (4MB SGRAM)
Matrox Millennium II (4MB WRAM)
Busmaster EIDE Drivers: VIA v2.13
Video Card Drivers: MGA Millennium 4.03.00.3410
OS: Windows 95 Service Release 2

Windows 95 Performance of the P55-VP3 (PCI Video)
CPU Business Winstone 97 Business Winstone 98 Bus. Gfx. Winmark 97
AMD K6-225 55.9 Not Run 114
AMD K6-233 55.1 17.4 115
Cyrix 6x86MX-PR2/200 (150/75) 53.4 Not Run 108
Cyrix 6x86MX-PR2/200 (166/66) 54.9 Not Run 117
Intel Pentium MMX - 225 52.3 Not Run 110
Intel Pentium MMX - 233 50.5 16.2 108

Whether you're using a PCI or an AGP video card with the P55-VP3 the performance is basically the same, however the ATI Xpert@Work still seems to have problems with any VP3 motherboard regardless of the drivers used.   VIA has apparently released their own drivers for the ATI card however ATI's own drivers do not work too incredibly well.

Windows 95 Performance of the P55-VP3 (128MB RAM)
CPU Business Winstone 97 Business Winstone 98
AMD K6-233 55.9 17.6

Performance of the P55-VP3
CPU VGA Bench SVGA Bench
AMD K6-233 (AGP Video) 129.0 fps 37.7 fps

The Final Decision

If you want a VP3 based motherboard, and you don't feel comfortable with FIC's lack of flexibility on their PA-2012 try the EPoX P55-VP3...don't expect bone shattering performance, but expect an all around decent motherboard with a bit of kick in it.
