AT Deals: Samsung 980 Pro 2TB SSD Only $399 at Amazon

Samsung's flagship, high-performance SSD, the Samsung 980 Pro, is currently marked down to $399 at Amazon. This drive is available in multiple capacities, and today's offer is for the 2TB model.
When we reviewed this drive back in September of 2020, we noted its reasonable price given the high-end performance and high-end specifications, including of course PCIe 4.0 support. The only major drawback was the difficulty users face when trying to squeeze the maximum performance from it as many modern desktops aren't equipped to handle the SSD's high throughput.
Samsung 980 PRO 2TB PCIe NVMe: was $429, now $399 at Amazon
The Samsung 980 Pro is a PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD, with capacities ranging from 250GB to 2TB. Under optimal conditions, this drive can reach read/write speeds as fast as 7000/5100 MB/ when paired with a PCIe 4.0 host. Otherwise in a PCIe 3.0 host it will reach around 3500/3470 MB/s respectively.
Underpinning the drive is Samsung's latest Elpis controller, as well as the company's in-house TLC NAND. Users can expect a limited, 5-year warranty from Samsung for the 980 Pro.

Ugh, I REALLY wish that Sony would get a move-on with their approved add-in SSD drive list for the PlayStation 5. I am already down to ~200GB of free space on mine, and I feel like there is a very strong chance that the Samsung 980 Pro will wind up being only a handful of drives that get approved for internal use on it. I'm just waiting for Direct Storage to actually become a thing so my WD Sn850 can actually meet its potential on PC. I'm sure I'll also pick up a drive in this class for PS5 once I can find a console, but I imagine by the time that happens these drives should be readily supported. What are they waiting for? It has been over three months since launch at this point and four software updates. I am not sure why this wasn't available at launch its just a standard drive slot. But there ARE products on the market to expand the storage of the XBOX. I'm not defending Microsoft here, I think it's ridiculous they have some BS proprietary standard that's slower than Sony's PCIe 4.0 implementation, but Sony might as well be proprietary if they are going to have a whitelist and lock out all the existing options. 4TB of SATA\PCIe 3.0 storage for $400 is retail for many products, so that wouldn't even be published as noteworthy. PCIe 4.0 currently has nearly 2x price premium over 3.0, though I agree it seems ridiculous it is such. Replydamianrobertjones - Tuesday, February 16, 2021 - link
